Magdalena SELINGER
Published: 2014-04-22
Regina, SK

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Magdalena (Alena) Selinger on Saturday, April 19, 2014. Our Mom died peacefully surrounded by all her children. Magdalena was born on May 5, 1919 in Hilda, AB to Anselm and Catherine Fieger. She was predeceased by her parents; brothers Louis, Peter and Al Fieger; infant sister Rosalie; grandson Jason Herle; son-in-law Rod MacLean; husband and father of her children, Alois Herle; second husband George Selinger. Magdalena is survived by her six children, Vern (Doris) Herle and their children Scott, Kathy (Andy), Todd (Angela), Patti-Ann (Paul), Doug (Ava), Bobby (Donna); Kathy (Orest) Gulka and their children Janine (David), Mark (Sharon), Greg (Maureen), Kent (Michelle), James (Jocelyn); Irene MacLean and her son Colin (Dodie); William (Crystal) Herle and their children Chandra (Lyndon), Andrea (Steve); Allyce Herle and her children Justin (Shannon), Lindsay (Rodrigo); and David (Terrie OíLeary) Herle. Her legacies and memory-keepers also include 31 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; sisters Eliza Herle and Betty Kuntz; brother Ignatius Fieger; sisters-in-law Marie Fieger and Audrey Fieger. Magdalena moved with her family to Prelate, SK as a young child. She lived there raising her family and participating actively in the life of the community with her husband Alois. As a homemaker and community volunteer, Magdalena excelled. She was creative and inventive and applied her skills to all handiwork, needlework, sewing, superb cooking and baking, and most of all to parenting. She was a tremendous hostess and loved to have her home full of family and friends. Mom was passionate about education, but as a teen in the Depression had to interrupt her own goals of further education. She strove to ensure that all of her children had an opportunity for post- secondary education. In 1967, the family moved to Regina so Magdalena could pursue her life-long dream of becoming a teacher. She taught for the Regina Catholic School System until her retirement in 1984. Upon her retirement, Magdalena had many wonderful years in which she was able to travel extensively to visit her children and to places more distant and exotic. Magdalena was a woman with incredible determination, strength, poise and grace that amazed even those of us who had known her all our lives. She defined the word family for all of us and her legacy will be cherished and will live on in her family. A FUNERAL MASS will be celebrated at Blessed Sacrament Church, 2049 Scarth Street, Regina, SK on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at 12:00 noon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in memory of Magdalena be made to Regina Food Bank, 445 Winnipeg Street, Regina, SK S4R 8P2.
